In 2018, after my promotion to the C-suite, I had a revelation. Looking around the executive table, I realized something disturbing: almost none of my peers had deep technical backgrounds. The people making critical technology decisions had never actually put hands on keyboard to build anything.
Meanwhile, I watched brilliant engineers—people with 10x the technical ability—stuck in the same roles year after year. They were passed over for promotions, undervalued, and eventually burnt out.
I knew this was wrong. Technology companies need executives who truly understand technology firsthand. But I also knew why it wasn’t happening: the path from engineer to executive is completely different from traditional career progression. It requires a specific set of strategies that nobody teaches.

That realization became the turning point in my 25-year career—from hands-on engineer to executive leader. I’ve lived every step of the journey, from late nights debugging production issues to leading technology strategy in the boardroom as CIO, CTO, and CISO.
